"Watchmaker Films has released two carefully restored, award-winning, cult status films by the late Austin independent Filmmaker, Eagle Pennell. Both films, "The Whole Shootin Match", and "Hell of a Note", were scored by Eagle's brother, Chuck Pinnell. These rare works are now available in a beautifully designed DVD box set, which includes an acclaimed documentary, "The King of Texas", about the life and times of Eagle Pennell. It will feature interviews with cast and crew members from several of Eagle's films , as well as Austin legends Willie Nelson, Ray Benson, Rick Linkletter, Lou Perryman, Bud Schrake and Louis Black. The King of Texas has an evocative guitar score composed and produced by Chuck Pinnell, with 2 additional tunes from gifted singer songwriter Slaid Cleaves. This instant classic is a colorful and lively portrait of Eagle, his work, and of his home state. The King of Texas premiered at
the 2008 SXSW Film Festival, playing at the historic Paramount Theater
for 2 nights, and was subsequently invited to the prestigous USA Film
Festival in Dallas. |

"The sad, funny, and solemnly shot documentary is the collaborative effort of Pennells brother, Chuck Pinnell, and Chucks sonEagles nephewRené Pinnell, along with Claire Huie. Theres also a dead-on appropriate soundtrack by Chuck Pinnell and Slaid Cleaves, who reworked some of his songs, like Give Me One Good Year, that seem as though they were written for this project." The Whole Shootin' Match (restored Version) "This is a rambling tale of two down-on-their luck, out of work mavericks looking for a get-rich-quick scheme. It's as much about the powerful destructive force of dreams like that on families and self-esteem as it is a gentle, knowinglook at how hard it is to get by. The film was screened in festivals around the world between 1978 and 1980 and screened on various television outlets, but by the mid-80s it had disappeared.During the course of his life, Eagle had lost the negative and dupe negative. The small number of known existing prints were all damaged. One of them was aired on a Texas public television station. This High Definition restoration is from the only known "clean" print. It also features a completely reconstructed soundtrack made from the original 1/4" production recordings and supervised by Shootin' Match sound recordist, Wayne Bell. In addition, Chuck Pinnell has remastered all the original music he composed for the film. We believe you will find the restoration a revelation. 3/14/06, Alamo Downtown, 6:30pm" Austin Chornicle March 3, 2006 |
